Duchess balances a lump of sugarA comedy of manners and errors.

When Ribby the pussy cat invites a dog named Duchess to a tea and pie party, the differences between them conspire to create a disaster.

Both creatures mean well, but Ribby doesn't really grasp how much dogs eat and how quickly, and Duchess, for her part, fears that whatever Ribby serves will likely include mouse. Duchess sneaks her own pie in, intending to quietly substitute it for Ribby's. The mix-up that ensues results in Duchess worrying that she ate the pie-pan.

The humor will be too sophisticated for children who don't yet understand social conventions, and there's a good deal more text than in contemporary picture books, but children who love even the mention of tea parties are still likely to enjoy.
