The Tailor of GloucesterAnimals team up to help an old man.

A poor, old tailor takes ill while facing a deadline to create a coat for the mayor's wedding. His cat Simpkin tends to him, but has no tailoring skills. Fortunately, the mice who visit his house take pity on him and sew the mayor's coat on their own!

This one of a kind Beatrix Potter story is atypical of much of her work.
  • Set in the city, rather than the country
  • Quite dense with text
  • Focused more on the world of humans than animals

Still, it's a fascinating and worthwhile work that explores the intersection of man and animals in a way that her other stories don't. Animals speak and have human-like characteristics as in all of Potter's work, but we see quite clearly that these qualities go unrecognized by man, though, in this story at least, all the animals are working to help one man, the tailor, a fellow they feel indebted to for his giving them a place to live.

Expect a real sense of seriousness, and of time and place.
