delivering the laundryLittle girl lost her handkerchief.

A little farm girl has misplaced her handkerchief (again!) and asks all the animals whether they've seen it, but none of them respond to her.

In her search she stumbles upon the home of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, a squat little washerwoman (with some decidedly non-human features). The old lady takes in the wash for the various animals who live on and around the farm. She even has Peter Rabbit's blue jacket! Lucie helps her deliver the clean clothes, but at the end of the story the nature of reality is called into question....

Was Lucie dreaming?

Different people will come to different conclusions, but The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle is an essential read because she asks the reader a question that can be applied to all of her work: do these wonderful characters actually exist, or are they a fantasy? Do they talk? Do they wear clothes? Are they perhaps real creatures that the author wishes had human-like lives?
