pigs danceA Beatrix Potter love story.

Aunt Pettitoes, a pig with too many offspring, is doing something about it. She sends well-behaved Pigling Bland away with his brother, Alexander, but soon Pigling Bland finds himself alone. He seeks shelter in a henhouse, where he's found by the hens' owner, angry Mr. Piperson.

Mr. Piperson clearly sees Pigling Bland as a future meal, but the young pig isn't quite clear on that. Fortunately, Mr. Piperson has another pig as a "guest," the lovely Pig-Wig. Pig-Wig knows exactly what the future holds.

The two escape together but immediately encounter more threats to their health and well-being. But they manage to escape to a better place and dance off into the sunset.

The Tale of Pigling Bland is quite a rich story. A young man heads out into the world, unprepared, but manages to find love and the hope and a brilliant future. You may also see in the story an allegorical tale of escaped slaves.

One of Beatrix Potter's lesser known stories, but surely one of her best and most complex.
