Mice stealingTwo hungry mice vandalize a dollhouse when they discover the tiny food isn't real.

In Beatrix Potter's Two Bad Mice, mouse couple Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca happen upon a dollhouse. The two mice try to move in but find the pretend food very upsetting, so they do some damage and loot a few furnishings they can make use of in their own home. Suffering pangs of guilt though, they do some good works for the two dolls they perceive as the home's owner. The real owner, a little girl, stations a doll policeman by the house to prevent further vandalism!

It's a delightfully silly (yet substantial) story that places young readers in the minds of characters who don't have the wherewithal or experience to make sense of their surroundings, react emotionally, but then regret their actions. In other words, children can see themselves in the two mice.
